This Tuesday evening various community members gathered for NBPA’s reoccurring Community Committee, or Comm Comm, at the Polish and Slavic Center. This free and inclusive event serves as a forum for ideas, updates and concerns regarding North Brooklyn’s parks and playgrounds. We learned about upcoming events from several of our partner groups, including the Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA), Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park (FBIP) and Friends of Trasmitter Park. Additionally, members of the Waterfront Design working group shared their thoughts about how we, both North Brooklyn’s community members and NBPA, can work toward maximizing our accessible open spaces along the waterfront. Lastly, attendees got the scoop on the exciting projects and re-openings of parks and playgrounds in North Brooklyn that are tentatively scheduled within the next several months, including the soccer field at McCarren, the reopening of the Sant Dougherty Playground, and the Newtown Barge Playground.
NBPA is grateful to everyone who attended our Comm Comm and shared their ideas about how to make North Brooklyn’s open spaces more equitable for all. One particular concern that was shared and echoed was in regards to the design concept for the new Box Street park that was presented a few weeks ago and how these drafted designs should be brought to Community Board 1 for further discussion and conceptualization. Moving forward, NBPA leadership is going to look into both how we can better schedule and format our future meeting times to allow every attendee the time to voice their concerns and ideas if they desire and the frequency of our meetings.
