Our People

North Brooklyn Parks Alliance was born out of the environmental justice movements of the 1980s and 90s. Many of the forebears of those movements makeup or inspire our board, staff, and volunteers.

Katie Denny Horowitz


Katie Denny Horowitz became Executive Director in May 2019, bringing nearly two decades of public and nonprofit experience to the role. She arrives at NBK Parks after six years of leading the fundraising, communications, and government relations at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens, and had previously served as the Director of Development for New Yorkers for Parks and the Director of Special Projects at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. 

A longtime Greenpoint resident, Katie has held past volunteer positions with NBK Parks, when it was Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), and chaired its Community Committee. Katie was also a board member of Greenpoint Waterfront Alliance for Parks and Planning (GWAPP), co-founder of the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition, and a Community Advisory Member of the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF).


Staff

Lynn del Sol


Native New Yorker, and twenty-plus year resident of Greenpoint, Lynn del Sol is a park lover. Which is great, since she joined one of the oldest nonprofits in the neighborhood fighting for equity and innovation in our public spaces. As the Development and Communications Manager, her job is to obsess over Instagram engagement, unearth an archive, and fire up a neighborhood’s philanthropic soul.

Lynn was an art dealer and curator for almost fifteen years -responsible for over two hundred exhibitions, including Lebanon’s first attempt at a National Pavillon during the 2005 Venice Biennale. She also served as a Visiting Scholar to the New School’s Humanities Action Lab where she partnered with OutHistory.org, ACT Up! Oral History Project, and the New York Public Library Archive Division. 

When she’s not spending an inordinate amount of time in a park with her best friend and pup, Lola, you can find her leading groups of folks around the neighborhood on walking tours discussing everything from rezoning and affordable housing to art, architecture, and history.

Sean Hoess


Sean Hoess is the co-founder and co-owner of Wanderlust, an innovative company that organizes yoga festivals, teacher training, and mental triathlons in beautiful locations around the world. Sean received his B.A. in 1992 from Columbia College and a law degree from Columbia Law School in 1997. Hoess co-founded the McCarren Tennis Association (MTA) in 2009. Sean, his wife Karina, and their two children live in Greenpoint.

Joe Vance


Joe Vance is the owner of the architectural and interior design firm Joseph Vance Architects, specializing in townhouse and brownstone renovations. He is a founding member of the North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, served as the co-chair of the Greenpoint Waterfront Association for Parks & Planning for five years, and served on the board of the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative for eight years. Joe has been a resident of the neighborhood for over 35 years.

Erich Anderer


Erich Anderer is the chief of neurosurgery at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn. Erich, a former Manhattanite, attended Regis High School followed by Columbia University for college and medical school. Erich is a board member of both the Japanese Medical Society of America and the New York State Neurosurgical Society. He is a founding member of the North Brooklyn Runners Club. He has been a resident of Brooklyn since 2004.

Jeff Fronek


Jeff Fronek is the Vice President & Director, Acquisitions of Rubenstein Partners. Prior to which he worked at Merrill Lynch and Ernst & Young. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations.

Trina McKeever


Trina McKeever is the manager of the artist Richard Serra studio. She also serves on Brooklyn’s Community Board 1 as the chairperson for the Landmarks and the co-chair of the Parks committee. She is a founding member of the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and a former board member of GWAPP (Greenpoint Waterfront Association for Parks and Planning). Since 1989 she has lived in Greenpoint with her three sons.

Mike Arnot


Mike Arnot, the immediate past chair of the NBPA board, is the founder of Boarding Pass NYC, a Greenpoint-based travel brand. He is the former regional commissioner of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Youth Soccer League (GWYSL). Originally from Canada, Mike is polite. He was a speechwriter and Policy Advisor to Canada’s Foreign Minister before moving to New York. Mike spends a lot of his recreational time in parks with his wife Stephanie and their three children.

Teresa Gonzalez


Teresa Gonzalez has an extensive background in government, community affairs, and public relations in New York City, including serving as Communications Director and Chief of Staff at the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit (CAU) during the Bloomberg administration. Prior to this, Teresa served as the Deputy Press Secretary at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Teresa received her bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and received a master’s degree The New School in New York. She sits on the boards of United Photo Industries and the New York Immigration Coalition. She resides in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she was born and raised.

Keith Berger


Keith Berger is a director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and has lived in Williamsburg since 2008. He enjoys spending time on the waterfront and is excited to see our parks improve. Keith is a member of the board of directors and a past chair for Urban Pathways, a homeless services non-for-profit in New York City.

Kate Bernstein


Kate Bernstein is a two-time Emmy Award-winning television producer and writer. Kate graduated Summa Cum Laude from Swarthmore College with a B.A. in Film and Cultural Studies. She received an M.A. in Cinema Studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Kate was born in Moscow, Russia, and raised in Southern Brooklyn. She’s been a proud resident of Williamsburg since 1999, where she currently lives on the waterfront with her husband and young daughter.

Steve Hindy


Steve Hindy is the co-founder and chairman of Brooklyn Brewery. He is the founding chair of NBK Parks. Steve has served on the Board of directors of Prospect Park Alliance for more than 20 years. He is also a member of the Board of directors of Gowanus Canal Conservancy and Transportation Alternatives. He is a tireless and dedicated champion of open space and walking, biking, and public transit.

Dewey Thompson


Dewey is the creative chief of Pickerel Pie Entertainment, a smart and strategic content for corporations. He has lived in Greenpoint with his wife, Katherine, and three kids, for more than 20 years helping found the Greenpoint Williamsburg Youth Soccer League (GWYSL). Serving Community Board 1 for five years, he eventually became the Co-Chair of the Greenpoint Waterfront Association for Parks & Planning (GWAPP). An avid paddler, he founded the North Brooklyn Boat Club of which he is currently the President.

Frances Lucerna


Frances Lucerna has been a pioneer of community arts and education for the past 30 years. She is the co-founder and executive director of El Puente in Williamsburg. In addition to serving as a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Community School Task Force for the White House Conference, Lucerna was a professional dancer before returning to Williamsburg where she’s lived since the 1980s. She holds a B.A. from Hunter College and an M.A. from Bank Street College.

David Lombino


David Lombino is a director at Two Trees Management, where he oversees the development pipeline for the Dumbo-based company. His current projects include the redevelopment of the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg and the development of BAM South in Downtown Brooklyn. Two Trees also developed and co-owns the Wythe Hotel. Previously David served as executive vice president at the New York City Economic Development Corporation under Mayor Bloomberg. He is the former city editor of the New York Sun newspaper. A native New Yorker, David now lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Heather, and their two children.

Ben Dietz


Ben Dietz is senior vice president and head of sales of VICE Media. Ben began his career in the music business at Sony, marketing developing artists from around the world in the U.S., and later taking U.S. artists abroad for Sony in Sydney Australia. He joined VICE in 2004 after a stint as executive producer at heavy.com. He attended the University of Pennsylvania. Ben resides in Greenpoint.

Alan Hill


Alan Hill is the owner of the creative agency Alan Hill Design, a small award-winning print and web agency with clients in the arts, publishing, real estate, education, and fashion. In addition to serving on the NBK Parks board, Alan is the Regional Commissioner of the Greenpoint Williamsburg Youth Soccer League and is actively involved in local public schools at PS 132 and NEST+m. He resides in Greenpoint with his wife, an artist, and two children

Jane Pool


Jane Pool is a soccer mom who has resided in Greenpoint for more than 15 years and is co-owner of Excello Recording Studio in Williamsburg. She has organized several events (including a Patti Smith concert) for the Greenpoint Williamsburg Waterfront Task Force. Jane is on the board of the Firehouse, Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG) and the PTA at PS 132 in Williamsburg.

Ward Dennis


Ward Dennis is a partner at Higgins Quasebarth & Partners, a preservation consulting firm specializing. Ward is a board member and former co-chair of Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), and a founding member of Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and the Waterfront Preservation Alliance. From 2003 until 2012 he served on Community Board 1 in Brooklyn. Participating in the ad hoc task force for the 2005 waterfront zoning and was chair of CB1‘s Land Use Committee from 2006 through 2011. A neighborhood resident since 1993, Ward lives in Williamsburg with his wife, Carol, and two children.

Spencer Baim

Spencer Baim is a chief strategic officer (CSO) of VICE Media and founder of Virtue, VICE’s creative agency. Baim is steering the company to become the most exciting and successful youth media company in the world. Prior to VICE, Baim was a brand strategist for advertising agencies Fallon and Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Spencer holds a B.A. from the University of Kent (England). Spencer lives in Greenpoint.

Josh Cohen


Josh Cohen, a third-generation Brooklynite, is a part-owner of eight restaurants, including four in Williamsburg (Casa Publica, Extra Fancy, Jimmy’s Diner, and Lilia) and one in Greenpoint (Anella). He grew up in Park Slope and studied at Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute in Rhode Island. Josh is the founder of Project Hunger and sits on the Board of the North Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Blair Papagni, have three children, Dylan, Maggie, and Crosby.

Doug Steiner

Doug Steiner spearheaded the rehabilitation of the Navy Yard back in 1999, slowly converting his “little” corner of the former shipyard into an enormous, state-of-the-art film studio. Over a decade later, the studio shows no signs of slowing down, hosting blockbuster productions, creating educational partnerships with both Brooklyn College and Carnegie Mellon, and setting an aggressive employment goal of 6,000 jobs over the next decade.
