Originally named Greenpoint Park, the park was renamed McCarren Park during the first half of the 1900s after Patrick Henry McCarren (1847-1909), an Irish immigrant who worked in the Williamsburg sugar refineries and eventually became a powerful State Senator.
The park is a popular regional destination for recreational softball, baseball, soccer, handball, kickball and other sports, as well as sunbathing and dog-walking. In late 2004, the park’s track was resurfaced and is a popular destination for running enthusiasts.
The park also includes the McCarren Park Pool, one of 11 WPA pools. Closed in the mid 1980’s, then having a brief interim use for concerts and other programming, the Pool is now undergoing a $50 million dollar PlaNYC restoration. See the McCarren Pool link for details.
The very popular skateboard park was opened this year. Additional recent improvements: NBK Parks repaired waterbox plumbing so that new gardens could be planted. In 2009, 100+ trees were added to the park (in addition to the 100+ planted in 2008). Tulips were planted. Lawns we reseeded (behind the Field House, one ball field, and an entrance). OSA also supplemented basic cleaning and maintenance supplies.
Please donate or volunteer to help us continue to improve McCarren Park.
McCarren Park enjoys the support of many parks related organizations who advocate for improvements, program activities, and manage areas like the dog run and Green Dome Garden:
Artist & Fleas, NBK Parks’ partner in providing Market in McCarren, a Saturday weekly local handcrafts/artists’ market, that includes children’s crafting classes
