Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the backbone of NBK Parks. From fun events like waterfront concerts and the opening McCarren Park Pool to crises like the Covid-19 pandemic, our volunteers have led the way—ensuring our local parks and green spaces are well-cared for and welcoming spaces for all!


Garden Club: Open Volunteer

  • The Garden Club is Back! This May through November, we are offering open volunteer sessions at Under the K Bridge Park, where you can learn how to identify native and invasive plant species, propagate and transplant plants from our nursery, weed beds, care for trees, manage pests, amend the soil, and connect with neighbors as you help transform this dynamic space. Led by NBK Parks Director of Horticulture, Lisa Bloodgood and our garden experts – select Fridays and Saturdays every month. –>> Sign Up Today!

Graphic Design Intern

  • Two Intern positions are open for students currently attending college or graduate school with a focus on Graphic Design and Digital Media. The candidate will assist the Deputy Director & Public Relations and Fundraising Managers with the layout and production of digital and print projects. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is required, a healthy obsession with design apps is helpful, and hand illustration skills are a plus. Candidates should have good communication, organization, and computer skills. Please send a CV and include links to your portfolio or work examples to info@nbkparks.org
    • Six-month commitment 
    • Two consecutive week-days or ten hours per week is preferred
    • College Credit can be arranged
    • A small monthly stipend is offered to help offset expenses

Full-time & Part-time Positions

Under the K Bridge Park – Part-Time Seasonal Gardener (1 Open Position)

  • Part-time, hourly ($20.00/hour ~ 30 hours/week)
  • Work takes place onsite at Under the K Bridge Park; may also support small-scale gardening efforts in other spaces cared for by North Brooklyn Parks Alliance.
  • Maintains health of the gardens and all planted areas within the park, assists with seasonal projects (such as soil remediation, nursery production, seed collection), and works alongside Grounds Crew Members to keep the park free from litter, pet waste, and weeds.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions. Able to use horticultural tools and electric equipment. 
  • Has a NY State driver’s license.

NBK Parks Horticultural Stewardship Coordinator (NYC Civic Corps) (1 Open Position)

  • Service term: September 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024
  • Full-time: 35 hours per week for 10 months (must complete a total of 1,200 hours)
  • Living allowance of up to $21,000 (pre-tax) distributed evenly throughout service term
  • Mobilizes volunteers in collaboration with North Brooklyn Parks Alliance staff, NYC Parks Department, and other community groups by planning and implementing activities (such as planting, weeding, seed collection, tree care, and winter preparation) in park spaces cared for by NBK Parks.
  • Specific activities also include supporting volunteer events by creating fliers and other promotional materials, writing social media and blog posts about volunteer efforts, and public speaking about our mission and programming with the goal of building volunteer capacity.
  • Must be willing to participate in activities outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Has a High School diploma or its equivalent prior to the start of the program

NBK Parks Public Realm Stewardship Coordinator (NYC Civic Corps) (1 Open Position)

  • Service term: September 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024
  • Full-time: 35 hours per week for 10 months (must complete a total of 1,200 hours)
  • Living allowance of up to $21,000 (pre-tax) distributed evenly throughout the term (10 months)
  • Engages community stakeholders in collaboration with North Brooklyn Parks Staff, NYC Department of Transportation, and Open Streets advocates by planning and implementing volunteer and outreach activities (such as street clean-ups, seasonal events, and information sessions) in Open Streets, Street Trees, and Plazas cared for by our organization.
  • Coordinates with NYC Civic Innovation Fellows to support our “Mapping of the Public Realm” initiative, a partnership between BetaNYC, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, and the office of City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez to collect and upload data about NYC’s public spaces, with the goal of identifying target areas for increased investment, outreach and stewardship with an eye toward equity. 
  • Specific activities also include outreach to community members to engage in volunteer citizen mapping, creating fliers and other promotional materials, writing social media and blog posts about volunteer opportunities, and public speaking about NBK Parks’ mission and programming with the goal of building volunteer capacity.
  • Must be willing to participate in activities outdoors in all weather conditions.
