Volunteer Opportunities

Guest Writer Program

With a new website comes a new blog, and NBK Parks is looking for volunteer guest writers with an academic interest in local history, New York City parks & public space, environmental justice, urban planning, and civic engagement to create original content aimed at inspiring and informing a community. Please include links to a minimum of three writing samples.

  • Six-month commitment 
  • Looking for a minimum of two pieces a month; one long-form piece (2,000+ words) and one short essay (800+ words)
  • The schedule is flexible- but periodic check-in, or brainstorming meetings are required 

SURVEY VOLUNTEERS

Survey Volunteers are the backbone of our organization’s community & research efforts. They help us gather the public’s feedback by conducting surveys and interviews as well as document the state of public facilities and spaces for maintenance, planning, and policy purposes.  No previous survey experience is necessary, as training will be provided, but individuals interested in this role should be comfortable working outside, on their feet and have the ability to successfully interact with the public. Photography skills are a plus.

  • Minimum Six-month commitment 
  • Weekdays & Weekends during Normal Business Hours
  • Time commitment is flexible- but four to five hours per week is preferred

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT VOLUNTEERS

These volunteers work under the supervision of both the Executive Director and Development & Communications Manager, performing research and scholarly duties on topics such as environmental justice, urban planning, public space & cultural diversity,  local history, organization history, and grant & fundraising opportunities. 

  • Minimum Six-month commitment 
  • Weekdays during Normal Business Hours
  • Time commitment is flexible- but four to five hours per week is preferred

DIGITAL PROJECTS INTERN

The Digital Projects Intern role is a researcher, storyteller, and project manager all in one. This role would be an apprenticeship under the Development & Communications Director. The purpose of the role is to bring more brand awareness to our organization and the nearly twenty years of service we’ve committed to North Brooklyn. Using an arsenal of media types interns are asked to identify, curate, and market digital stories. Please include links to your portfolio or work examples.

  • Six-month commitment 
  • Two consecutive days or ten hours per week is preferred
  • College Credit can be arranged
  • A small monthly stipend offered to help offset expenses 

GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

Graphic Design seeks an intern who is currently attending college or graduate school for Graphic Design. The candidate will assist the Development & Communications Director with layout and production of digital and print projects. Knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite is required and illustration skills are a plus. Candidates should have good communication, organization, and computer skills. Please include links to your portfolio or work examples.

  • Six-month commitment

POLICY FELLOW

North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, in close partnership with El Puente, Newtown Creek Alliance, and North Brooklyn Neighbors, is currently seeking a passionate, community-oriented researcher, scholar, and advocate to join the North Brooklyn Open Space Coalition for an intensive 9-month fellowship, made possible with support from the NYC Green Fund.

  • 15 Hours of work/week 
  • Masters degree (or near program completion) in urban planning, public policy, geography, public administration or similar subject area 
  • A passion for parks and open space and/or demonstrated community outreach or activism, as evidenced in coursework, extra-curricular activities, or volunteer work

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

 The Volunteer Coordinator is a part-time, seasonal position focused on developing and coordinating dynamic volunteer stewardship opportunities in our parks. This spring, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance is launching a volunteer program that spans funding, marketing, and equipment purchases for existing “Friends” and volunteer stewardship groups, to organizing targeted volunteer events across Brooklyn’s Community Board 1. To support these efforts, NBK Parks is hiring a seasonal Volunteer Coordinator. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with NBK Park’s network of Friends and volunteer groups.

  • Part-Time / 15 Hours of work/week 
  • A passion for civic engagement and community-based programs.
  • Organizes, coordinates and manages the volunteer experience, processes and procedures, including compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

OPERATIONS MANAGER

 The Operations Manager is a new full-time, seasonal position (April – October) integral to shaping the future of the park. This is a project management role that brings technical and operational skills to plan, monitor, maintain, and support the park facilities and systems. This role will report to the Executive Director, managing two part-time grounds crew, and working closely with the Head Horticulturalist to implement the overall horticultural vision, and with the Volunteer Coordinator on volunteer stewardship activities in the park.

  • Full-Time
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of demonstrated successful experience in a operational and/or technical capacity 
  • Act as the point of contact for park operations and grounds crew, such as facilities troubleshooting, safety protocol, and grounds 
  • Manage park grounds crew, including tracking schedules and work hours, assigning priorities and tasks, and issuing equipment (2-way-radios, keys, PPE etc.).

GROUNDS CREW

The Grounds Crew will be responsible for maintaining Under the K Bridge Park — including green areas, trees, shrubs, flowers, stair paths, and retaining walls. The Crew will keep the gardens irrigated and the park free from trash, litter, debris, weeds, and industrial waste. The Crew will report to the Operations Manager and support their maintenance of the facilities and technical needs, while stewarding the gardens under the direction and vision of the Horticulturist.

  • Part-Time / 30 Hours of work/week 
  • Maintaining site plazas and landscaping, including green spaces, trees, flowers, and pathways
